Think you’re Netwise?! Make it official by taking the Kid-Safe Internet Online Safety Pledge.
I PROMISE:
I will never give out any personal information such as my name, address, phone number, parents’ names and numbers or the name and/or location of my school without the permission of my mom or dad. My screen name is all anyone needs to know, no matter who they say they are.
I will keep all my passwords a secret from everyone except my mom and dad. Nobody else should ever ask me for them, not even the internet company.
I will never open e-mails from people I don’t know. Instead, I will show them to my mom and dad.
When I am chatting online, I will always remember that there is no way I can tell if the person I’m talking to is really a friend, or just pretending to be my friend. Not everyone is as cool as they sound on the Internet. I will use a screen name that doesn’t tell people whether I am a boy or a girl, and I will never agree to meet up with an online “friend” in person.
I will never share pictures of myself or my family online.
I will be careful about what I type online, because nothing is totally private, not even my e-mails.
I will be kind and respectful to other people online. I won’t ‘yell’ at people by typing in all caps. Instead I will use emoticons to let people know how I feel about something.
If somebody says something online that makes me feel unhappy, I will not respond to their message. I will simply log off and tell my mom or dad.
If I am not sure about something that happens online, or if I come across information that makes me uncomfortable, I will log off right away and go speak with my parents about it.
I will spend time surfing the web with my parents. I will show them what I like to do online and teach them what I know about the Internet.
I will talk with my mom and dad to agree a set of rules about using the Internet. In return for my parents’ trust, I will act responsibly at all times. I won’t visit areas of the web that they have asked me not to, and I will stick to time limits for going online.
Remember: Cruising the Information Super Highway can be fun, but it always pays to know the rules of the road.
